Arthur’s Eerste Sinterklaas
Today I did something that felt a bit scary…
I read a children’s book I wrote to Reception and Year 1 at my son’s school ![]()
I genuinely wrote “Arthur’s First Sinterklaas” for him because I couldn’t find an English picture book that explained Sinterklaas in a way that felt warm, kind, and welcoming for kids who are new to it.
The book is in English, but it has Dutch words woven all the way through because that’s how life works for so many children, and because I love translanguaging in all its messy, beautiful normality.
Sitting on a tiny chair, watching children lean in, repeat Dutch words, laugh at the horse, and ask questions about shoes by the heater was honestly magical.
Writing a picture book was way outside my comfort zone… but today made it feel completely worth it.
Arthur’s First Sinterklaas — coming soon
And yes… I’m now looking for an illustrator! If you know someone who loves inclusive children’s books, please send them my way.
Still a bit emotional. Very grateful. ![]()
