Hi, I’m Marijke, and I’m the person behind Every Language Learner.
I’m an EAL specialist with over 20 years of experience working with children, young people, adults, families and educators. But my passion for this work comes from something much more personal.
I was an English language learner myself. When I was 10, I lived in the US. When I arrived at school, all I knew how to say in English was “yes” and “no”. That was it. I was dropped off at a small elementary school in Leavenworth, Kansas. There was no EAL teacher and no specialist language support. I just had to find my way through the school day, without really understanding the language around me.
I know what it feels like to be the child who doesn’t understand. I know what it feels like to have ideas and thoughts in your head but not have the English to express them. And I know how important it is when someone takes the time to help you understand. That experience has stayed with me and has shaped the work I do today.
What I do
Through Every Language Learner, I work with schools and educators to make education more inclusive for children who are learning English and using more than one language. I provide consultancy, training, workshops and resources that help teachers support multilingual learners in practical, meaningful ways.
I also work directly with children and families through English for Learning and Belonging, helping children access school while recognising and celebrating the languages they already have.
And I work with adults through English for Work and Belonging, offering supportive ESOL classes that help people develop the English they need for work, education, social life and everyday situations.
Because learning English isn’t just about learning a language.
It can mean being able to talk to your child’s teacher.

What I believe
I believe every language a person speaks is an asset.
I believe children shouldn’t have to leave their home language or identity at the classroom door.
I believe families should be able to understand and take part in their children’s education.
And I believe adults learning English should have opportunities to use their language skills to build the lives they want.
Most of all, I believe language should be a bridge, not a barrier.
That’s why I created Every Language Learner.
To help children, adults and families access learning, work and everyday life — and to feel that they belong while doing it.
